Jeffrey N. Cutler
 

Jeff is an Intellectual Property Attorney with more than 25 years’ experience in corporate and private law firm environments.  He has an extensive background in all areas of patent and trademark procurement, as well as U.S. and European patent litigation.  His corporate experience includes the directorship of a global IP department with an in-house staff of attorneys and support staff in multiple business units in the U.S,, Europe and China.
Jeff graduated from the University of Tennessee School of Engineering with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering wih Honors in 1986.  While in engineering school, he participated in the Cooperative Education program that garnered him valuable experience in three different settings at Duke Power (Charlotte, NC - now Duke Energy); Memphis Light, Gas and Water (Memphis, TN); and Rust International (Birmingham, AL).  Jeff received his Jurisprudence Doctorate from the University of Tennesee School of Law in 1989.
Jeff began his legal career at Pitts & Brittian, P.C., an IP boutique in Knoxville, TN.  He gained almost 18 years of experience while at Pitts & Brittian, the last 9+ years as a shareholder in the firm.  Jeff was primarily resposible for the preparation and prosecution of patent applications in primarily involving electrical and electro-mechanical devices including medical imaging (Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Computed Tomography (CT) and related formats; wireless pet containment, training, and restraining devices; telecommunications; and many others.  Prosecution of applications frequently included conducting personal interviews with patent examiners.  Follow this link to see a sampling of the patents acquired by Mr. Cutler.  

Jeff was also primarily responsible for performing all patentability, right-to-use, and infringement searches at USPTO search facilities.  

Along with his duties of prepraring and prosecuting patent applications, Jeff was also responsible for training associates with respect to patent application preparation and prosecution, patent searches, and examiner interviews.

In 2008, Mr. Cutler decided to further his understanding of IP law and went in-house at Techtronic Industries North America, Inc. (TTiNA - now Techtronic Industries Power Equipment) in Anderson, SC.  Some of the brands for which Mr. Cutler was responsible included RYOBI, RIDGID, CRAFTSMAN (cordless), HOMELITE and POWERSTROKE.  He was responsible for organizing the department to create an efficient flow of information from key in-house personell (e.g., inventors, engineering, marketing, executives, etc.) both internally, between business units, and to outside counsel.  

Within about a year of starting at TTiNA, Mr. Cutler was promoted to a newly-created global role as the Global Director of Intellectual Property for the parent company, Techtronic Industries Co. Ltd. (TTi) based in Hong Kong.  His role was to harmonize the various IP departments around the world, including notably: Milwaukee Electric Tool (Milwaukee, WI), TTi Floor Care North America (Glenwillow, OH - HOOVER, ROYAL, DIRT DEVIL and ORECK); and VAX (Biringham, England).

In his roles at TTi, Mr. Cutler worked with global IP counsel, which included managing existing counsel, and hiring new counsel in the U.S., Europe and China.  Mr. Cutler was intimately involved in all phases of IP while at TTi, from clearance, to patent and trademark procurement, and through controversies.
